Brockwell Swimmers can report another successful Summer Swim/Walk along the River Arun on Sunday 28th July. Our intrepid members met at Victoria station (some nearly missing the train!) at a brisk hour of the morning before a speedy journey down to the town of Arundel for the start of our journey.
A short diversion was taken to inspect their local Lido which looked so small in comparison to our Olympic size pool. After a very short debate it was decided not to swim but to press on with the more urgent task of our ten mile walk, and a search for picnic goodies in the town. So armed with supplies we passed through Arundel and were soon walking along the riverside path with only the company of swans, paddleboarders and the occasional fisherman.
Thankfully the clouds began to break and the sun began to beat down. At which point the route takes a dive into the shade of some woods which made a welcome respite from the heat. The countryside round these parts is quite stunning and a foragers dream with wild blackberries galore and damsons for the picking.
We then rejoined the river for the last five miles passing the remains of a lost canal scheme and a rather lonely looking seal. The path then leads behind the back of a golf course before finally emerging onto a wide shingle beach. The weather was windy so changing into our costumes was less than dignified. Having done so we started the long walk out to sea, it was low tide so this did take a while! However, all worth it and just what our aching legs needed.
Then on to Littlehampton for well deserved fish, chips and ice-cream. For once we actually timed the return train just right, so all in all a perfect day out. Keep your eyes peeled for our next adventure.
