For our final field trip of 2018, Brockwell Swimmers took to the waters of the South coast against the dramatic backdrop of the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters.
Conditions on the 4th November were lively with booming breakers, whistling winds and sea temperatures of 12°C. After a clifftop consultation with coach Steve Baker we decided to abort plans to crawl over all of the sisters and return on foot in favour of a shorter but challenging enough distance befitting of the mixed abilities of our merry band of ten swimmers.
Entry was probably the most difficult bit with the steep pebble beach throwing stones at the angry waves and us caught in the crossfire, but then we were off. We stopped several times to float on our backs and take in our breathtaking surroundings – as if we weren’t out of puff enough already.
In the end we conquered two sisters (and a bit) before returning against the tide – with the steps to the car park appearing to move back several metres with every stroke. Our bedraggled appearance drew the attention of some Japanese tourists who clicked away as we exited the water in a somewhat undignified manner.
After a hug with a mug in the cafe, the sense of euphoria kicked in. Then having inhaled a delicious roast dinner at the Beachy Head Tavern we were back on the road to London by mid-afternoon feeling accomplished.
That’s all folks for 2019 but we will be re-entering open water again in the new year as soon as we possibly can. Keep an eye on the website for details.
