Another Great Year

The club continues to grow and currently can boast 384 members, of which 131 are actively taking part in events, principally the Monday evening sessions at Alleyns School. We would like to thank all the volunteers who have helped publicise the club at the Herne Hill Market and also those who helped hand out leaflets at the Lido’s first Community Day (another planned for next year). We thank members who have shared and liked our various social media posts.

Our weekly Monday swim sessions at Alleyns School have proved popular again this year with good attendance and a healthy bank balance. Much of this is due to the excellence of coaches Sam and Robert for which we deeply grateful. Our six junior Barracudas sessions in November and December proved successful and will continue these in the New Year, starting January 13th.

The two Club Invitation Relays were some of the most successful we have ever run. The Spring Relays were great fun and the Summer Relays brought a record number of competing clubs taking part and a full Brockwell Swimmers team built from active members.

We offer a big thanks to Steve Whitmore for arranging three Channel Relay teams this year, all of which completed their swims in record times. An incredible success. This was accompanied by the usual Lido relay, organised by Alex Devine and Andrew Saward, which saw 25 members complete the equivalent Channel distance. Combined, the events raised £7,085 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, a 32% increase on last year. Well done to all the swimmers who took part.

Other events this year included the Spring Heron Cup and the June Relays organised by the South London Swimming Club at Tooting Bec Lido. We didn’t come first, but didn’t come last. “It’s the taking part” as they say. Club members also entered the Swim Serpentine event in September.

This year we held one Swim/Walk event, walking from Goring to Cholsey on a sunny day in early September. This was a great day out ‘going wild’ with the Brockwell Swimmers and hopefully more will be planned for next year. These will be announced on the web site in due course.

This year’s Lifeguards’ Christmas Box for our dedicated Lido team raised a record £600 and we thank all those who contributed.

Brockwell Swimmers is a volunteer led organisation and continues to grow through the combined efforts of its members. We are grateful for all members who took and active role this year and encourage more to do so in the future.

We look forward to another year of growth, success and swimming in 2025.
