On Saturday 3rd August the Brockwell Swimmers club organised a remarkable relay at the lido to raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute RNLI, inspired by the heroic efforts of three groups who had recently braved the elements to cross the English Channel. While those earlier crossings were marked by fierce determination and endurance, this lido relay had its own challenges and triumphs.

The morning began with a few raindrops and the remnants of hangovers for some participants, casting a slight shadow over the early hours. However, as the event progressed, the swimmers shook off the cobwebs and began to give their all, embodying the same spirit of perseverance that had driven their predecessors across the Channel.

As the day wore on, the sun broke through the clouds, mirroring the growing enthusiasm of the swimmers. One by one, participants exceeded their pledged distances, pushing the team well beyond the original target of 33.8 kilometers. By the end of the event, the collective effort had seen them cover an impressive 40 kilometers, a true testament to their dedication and team spirit.

Alex, stationed at the side to track each swimmer’s contribution, was left with a sore thumb from all the clicking, a small price to pay for the overwhelming success of the day. The event not only raised significant funds for the RNLI but also highlighted the camaraderie and determination that defines the Brockwell Swimmers club.
