Some wonderful 1962 footage of Water Polo being played at Brockwell Lido has just emerged on YouTube (fast forward to middle). Interestingly they seem be playing the length of the pool, rather than the width as we do today. The pool was deeper in those days, with diving boards, so this might have made it possible to play without touching the bottom.
It’s great to see the old fountain that used to be at the far end aerating the water. The whole pool seems to be a hive of activity with lots of spectators and even some boy scouts canoeing. All quite poignant, as this Sunday was the day we had requested to run our own Cold Water Invitation Gala at Brockwell Lido. A request sadly declined by Fusion Lifestyle (managers of the centre) as they were going to run their own… but didn’t. Fingers crossed for our November 2017 application.
Do you have some old shots of the Lido? If you do, we’d love to see them.
